Amsterdam, 29 January 2016 – Today Prof. Dr. Göran SLUITER, lawyer at Prakken d’Oliveira Human Rights Lawyers, has filed with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court a complaint against Nigerian President BUHARI.
The complaint has been filed on behalf of the people of Biafra and 17 unnamed victims, and contains a factual and legal analysis of the crimes against humanity committed against Biafrans by Nigerian police and military. The complaint also sets out the evidence of several counts of, among other things, murder, torture, enforced disappearance and arbitrary arrest and detention.
It follows from the complaint that since the election of President BUHARI in 2015 the violence against Biafrans has seriously intensified. This is exemplified by several instances of shooting at –and killing- Biafrans who are peacefully demonstrating. The campaign against Biafrans, under the authority of President BUHARI, is also very well illustrated by the arbitrary arrest and detention of Biafran leader mr. Kanu for several months now.
The complaint contains evidence of crimes against humanity against Biafrans and the role of President BUHARI in these crimes. It also calls upon the ICC Prosecutor to launch without delay criminal investigations in the Situation of Nigeria, which has been on the agenda of the International Criminal Court for considerable time now.
The full text of the complaint –but without annexes- can be found here.
