It was a swift fling even by Taylor’s standards. The high profile, and much mocked, romance between the music superstar and British actor Tom Hiddleston lasted just three months.
A source close to the couple said the split was “amicable”. They were last known to have spent time together in mid-August after Taylor Swift sent her plane to pick Hiddleston up from Australia where he was filming the latest Thor movie.
It took him to her home in Rhode Island for the weekend but, sadly, it would be their last time spent together.
Swift and Hiddleston began dating amid a blaze of publicity in June when they were photographed canoodling on a beach near Swift’s home in Rhode Island, New England.
Now, the relationship is said to have “fizzled” out, with the 26-year-old singer reportedly uncomfortable with public displays of affection.
“She was the one to put the brakes on the relationship,” a source close to the couple told Us magazine. “Tom wanted the relationship to be more public than she was comfortable with. Taylor knew the backlash that comes with public displays of affection but Tom didn’t listen to her concerns when she brought them up.”
Hiddleston, 35, is “embarrassed that the relationship fizzled out,” the source said.
The flurry of paparazzi snaps of the pair together – including one of Hiddleston wearing an “I heart TS” t-shirt – drew intense scrutiny, with some even questioning whether it was a real romance or a “showmance”.
“The truth is that Taylor Swift and I are together, and we’re very happy. That’s the truth. It’s not a publicity stunt,” Hiddleston told the Hollywood Reporter in July.
“It was an intense start,” a Hiddleston insider told Us. “No one can keep that kind of momentum going.”
As well as the photographs in the US, Swift was pictured going for a romantic walk along a Suffolk beach with the Night Manager actor – accompanied by his mother.
The scrutiny didn’t diminish even when they arrived two weeks later in Australia, where Hiddleston was filming Thor: Ragnarok.
Swift returned to the US and the time apart is said to have put a strain on the relationship.
“They get along great and will remain friends, but they just don’t see it working romantically right now,” the source close to the couple told Us.
The relationship emerged two weeks after the Shake It Off singer split with Calvin Harris. The Scottish DJ later criticised Swift on Twitter, accusing her of trying to “bury” him in a bid for publicity.
